‘Love Leads’ gives the reader a big picture of what God has set us on earth to do together in faith communities, and what leaders are meant to be about in the midst of those communities. But the quality I appreciated the most was the specific facets of the missional church, which Janzow calls ‘Patterns’, giving detail and substance to the work of a missional leader. Focused in on specific areas, the readers can determine which patterns draw them deeper into their calling and which patterns the readers can focus their energy to enhance their effectiveness.
‘Love Leads’ best attribute is that it is hopeful in a time when many wonder if the church even has a future. Janzow makes it clear that there is great hope for the church, not because of the right formulas for doing a missional church, but because it is God’s church and when a missional leader depends upon the grace and power of God at work, there is no telling what great things God will do through a leader that allows for growth and change and possibility.
Often when I hear about a new book on leadership in the Church I secretly hope no one will ask me to read it. There are so many “experts†telling pastors, leaders, and congregations that they have the keys to all things effective for mission and ministry in the local congregation.
I have to admit that when Pastor Janzow gifted me with his book, Love Leads, I wondered to myself if I would get around to reading it. Because I respect and trust Pastor Janzow, I did read his book and I’m so glad I did.
This is not so much a “how to†book as it is the story of pastor, leaders, and congregation members who were inspired by the Living Word of God to venture beyond their comfort zones in order to share the Good News of God’s love in Jesus Christ. Pastor Janzow describes well how the Spirit working in his heart and in the congregation he served led him from comfortable, well accepted patterns of ministry to a wide-open embrace of missional leadership.
Of course, this did not happen by accident. Pastor Janzow carefully draws on the wisdom and leadership of other church leaders while always inviting the witness of Scripture to inform and guide. Again and again Pastor Janzow points to the words of the Old and New Testaments as the source and inspiration from which new patterns and new forms of leadership emerge.
Not every pastor or leader will find in this book the specific answers they may be looking for to energize and open up the ministry of their own congregations. If they take time to read this book and make the journey with the Pastor Janzow and the people of Ascension, however, they will be encouraged by the possibilities of what could happen in their own place.

Love Leads, is written primarily for Pastors and lay leaders as a guide for developing a church mission based on God’s love for His people, and then creating a plan to implement that mission. While I am not a member of the clergy or even a leader in our church, I belong to a congregation that, in many ways, has been satisfied with just existing - we hope people will come through the doors because we’re in the neighborhood. Pastor Jansow explains that a ‘missional church’ is one that has an outward vision for sharing the Gospel. It does this by first examining the needs of the community and then calling on the creative abilities of its members to meet those needs. In this very practical and easy to understand book, Jansow gives step-by-step guidance based on scripture and the experience of his own leadership in an amazing missional congregation in Wisconsin. I recommend this book to both church leaders and pew sitters. You will be inspired to grow spiritually and share God’s love with your neighbors and the world.
I just finished this book on being a missional pastor and leading a missional congregation. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone interested in being more than a “Congregational Chaplain,†or being a part of a congregational that lives beyond its walls.
This is not a cutting-edge book that is filled with the latest fad or fancy. Frank Janzow is an experienced Lutheran pastor, who practices what he preaches and has done what he writes about. The book contains solid scholarship, practical advice, and tested observations. It is not selling one-size-fits-all program, but rather is a treasury of many great ideas. One or two of the ideas presented in the book would be helpful to any pastor or congregation. A handful of the ideas could be transformational.
Janzow cites many examples from his three decades of ministry at Ascension Lutheran Church. They are very illustrative, but their number was the one thing I really didn’t like in the book. I would have preferred if Pastor Janzow would have expanded his examples to include other congregations in other settings. This is only a minor criticism however.
Enjoy the book. It is stimulating and even inspiring. It breaths a breathe of fresh air into pastoral ministry and congregational life.

This book reflects a lifetime of service in a very successful church. Other churches could benefit from reading this book.
