Set primarily in Japanese occupied Malaya during World War II, "Abode of Souls The Gift" tells the story of prisoners and their captors in Demeure des Ãmes (Abode of Souls), an internment camp for Allied civilians.
Principal characters among the Allies include sisters Bea Garlow and Betty Anderson, two American women whose complimentary strengths help sustain the diverse and sometimes contentious inhabitants in the camp. Another featured protagonist is Samuel McCauley, a British academic and linguist who finds purpose in educating young prisoners.
Lieutenant Shoji Tsuru administers Demeure des Ãmes. A literary scholar who studied in the U.S., Tsuru understands and sometimes sympathizes with his Western prisoners. He is a man on a tightrope, trying to balance his sense of patriotic duty, and his better nature as a man who does not enjoy inflicting pain. As a counterpoint to Tsuru, Sergeant Susumi Nakati relishes every opportunity to punish and torment his captives.
Not all of the prisoners are good people, and not all of their Japanese masters are evil; most display their weaknesses and strengths when confronted with the hardships of such an unremittingly difficult existence. The internees suffer numerous hardships grueling work details, hunger & malnutrition, and appalling abuse. Yet, amid all the brutality, turmoil, and heartache, stories emerge of hope, humor, the power of love and friendship, and the astounding resilience of the human spirit in times of trial.

What an excellent read! I cannot imagine how the civilians interned in the Japanese POW camps survived the years of systematic brutality. We hear their stories of unspeakable torture and wonder how could a culture produce such monsters. This book unlike so many brings out the fact that not all Japanese camp guards and commandants were bad people many were in a sense prisoners of the system. The book is tenderly told, you can feel the suffering both mental and physical and yet under it all there is hope and resilient spirit that shines through. The author kept me guessing thought-out the book; people I thought would die - didn't, people I didn't expect to die - did, people I wanted to die - some did some didn't. This was not a "let's bash the Japanese" book nor was it a depressing book. It was an excellent piece of WWII story telling.
