With the absurdities of desert living set in her literary cross hairs, Fine once again skewers some of Scottsdale's finest while her protagonist, Jean, tries to find sanity in a world where it rains dirt and blind sheep fall off mountains. Modern living isn't for sissies and Fine addresses the deeper issues of the environment and political corruption as she couches them in laugh-out-loud lines. It is wickedly funny.

Marcia Fine is a wonderful author who I recently met online. Her book, Stressed in Scottsdale's title made it a must-read for me. It didn't disappoint, either. Just one in a series (The Jean Rubin series); it examines reptilian behavior unintentionally, perhaps, in one of it's meccas, the female mind. (the other mecca being, of course, the male mind).Fear and suspicion originate in the reptilian brain, whether rational or irrational. It is for good reason, though. That brain is responsible for our survival as human beings. However, our brainstem can take this a bit too far. "Survival" can turn into obsession and paranoia, which also reside in this brain.
A prime example of this is main character, Jean. Jean has a whole list of stressors, too lengthy to list here. Not the least of which is her suspicion that her husband, Maury having an affair because he has taken a recent interest in the caloric content of kung pao chicken and heading off to the gym more. While this alone might not constitute an affair, his switch his from tightie whities to plaid boxers might be more cause for alarm.
I won't spoil it for you as to whether Maurey is indeed having an affair. {You'll have to read it for yourself). But as it turns out Jean discovers that she is addicted to stress, like a lot of us. As she puts it,
"I am alone in a chasm of appointments, management, and problems."

Stressed In Scottsdale The Jean Rubin Series Book 3 edition by Marcia Fine Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Had a hard time getting into this one, as I simply couldn't relate to the main character. Jean Rubin has to juggle the demands of her job with the demands of her friends and family. I could see what the author was trying to do, but since so much of Jean's stress seemed self-inflicted, I couldn't really sympathize or find it amusing. For instance, I found nothing amusing about her recently unemployed son asking for money so that he and his wife could go on a fertility vacation in order to have a second child. Excuse me?
Really liked Jean's husband Maury, a semi-retired doctor. He seemed like a nice guy, but I do wish that Jean had insisted that he help her out around the house more. His heart was in the right place, but he had no clue. Didn't really care for Jean's two best friends, April and Glee. They seemed a little two-dimensional to me, and I couldn't relate to either one. Her mother seemed like a typical elderly mother, so no complaints there. Didn't like her kids at all, as they came across as self-centered and spoiled.
Gave this book a 3/5 rating as it was an okay read. No issues at all with the writing or plot, but I just didn't care for the characters or find it amusing. Think it's because I've been fiercely independent my entire life, so can't relate to people who allow others to take advantage of them or haven't learned how to say no.
Jean Rubin is very stressed. She's a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, employee and friend. Thankfully her BFF's Glee and April occasionally take her to the spa to help her de-stress. Still, her life is way to hectic and drastic measures are needed. She has to find a way to calm the whirlwind that is her life. This is a very very funny book. Reading it helped me to de-stress and I think anyone who doesn't think it's funny must have had their funny bone surgically removed.
There were so many times I found myself thinking "this sounds familiar". This book helped me discover that my own life was much more funny than I give it credit for. All the characters are so likable and I couldn't pick a favorite. Every situation was just as funny, if not more, than the one before. This is a totally hilarious book.

Beginning this book I had a little bit of problems with it holding my attention, but wait, that soon was halted as I was plunged into the hectic and all too familiar life of, Jean Rubin. As I followed the happenings I actually at times felt she had been spying on my life and taking notes. Here is a woman who really wants to get it all together, she longs for less stress and more relaxation. Will she ever achieve her goal?
As the story rolls on and we meet her husband, mom, kids, grandkids, co-workers and friends we fully understand why she breaks down, now the problem, how to bring her back up. I found her husband endearing, although not really having a clue, her mom, well let's just say she was a mom, and her children are like so many thinking mom can do it all. You have to laugh, don't you? And of course we cannot leave out her zany friends, who although have Jean's welfare at heart, do not always take the time to stop and think. Crazy! But funny!
I loved some of the antics of her friends trying to help Jean out of her slump and help her to relax. My favorite part of the entire book is when her friends take her to loosen up and she has to do motions with her body that she doesn't do in the privacy of her own home. I laughed out loud, somehow remembering my own self in similar situations.
Listen, if you are stressed, and who isn't, this book is for you. You will, relate, have pity, get mad, and maybe be glad you are who you are instead of being Jean. I do promise you some laugh out loud moments in this read, and isn't that what life is all about.
Very enjoyable!
Funny, somewhat irreverent and delightful. Scottsdale, AZ is truly a unique, almost surreal community; one would have to live here to fully appreciate the truthfulness in the character descriptions. The author did a great job portraying some of its special aspects.
There were some funny parts that made it a brainless read. I never would have read it but it was chosen for our book group.
Marcia Fine is not just hilarious, but her Jean Rubin character has empathy, passion, and loyalty. I followed her and her frenetic life with tears in my eyes I both laughed and cried. I plan to read all the Jean Rubin books, and everything that I can get my hands on that Marcia has written. She's such a talent!
